Plot summary
Joey Fane is ten and has been away from home for two years, since his younger sister Susy drowned and he was held to blame. Now he comes back to the family's London house, where his mother Virginia still mourns and his father Bill, a Queen's Messenger, works. Nanny is the household's live-in maid and once looked after Virginia and her sister Pen as children, and Virginia depends on her. Joey refuses anything Nanny cooks, will not bathe while she is in the room, and wants a lock on his door. Bill leaves on a business trip, and Joey is alone in the house with Virginia and Nanny.
