Trevor Howard
Biography
Trevor Howard was an English actor of stage and screen who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his professional career at the Gate Theatre in 1934, while still a student. After further stage work, including appearances at Stratford-upon-Avon, he received his first film credit in The Way to the Stars (1945), and David Lean cast him in Brief Encounter (1945), which made him a leading man. Carol Reed's The Third Man (1949) followed, and he later settled into character roles, often as military men. He was nominated four times for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor, winning for The Key, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Sons and Lovers (1960). Later films included Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), Battle of Britain (1969), Ryan's Daughter (1970), Superman (1978), Gandhi (1982) and White Mischief (1987). He also won an Emmy Award.

Big break
David Lean spotted Howard in The Way Ahead and recommended him to Noel Coward for the role of Alec in Brief Encounter (1945), a film whose success launched Howard's film career.
Own stunts
Throughout his film career, Howard made sure every contract he signed had a clause that let him skip work whenever a cricket Test match was on.
Beyond film
Howard's first Shakespeare recording, made in the 1960s for Caedmon Records, cast him as Petruchio in a complete The Taming of the Shrew, with Margaret Leighton as Kate. In 1986 the BBC World Service gave him the lead in King Lear.
Getting ready for a role
While filming The Third Man in Vienna, Howard visited a bar in his British Army officer's uniform costume and was detained by the Royal Military Police for impersonation before being released.
