Plot summary
After the wealthy Ashby parents die in a plane crash, their children are left with Aunt Harriet. The eldest, Tony, vanishes into the sea at fifteen, leaving only a suicide note. Eight years later, Simon is a spendthrift alcoholic who wants Eleanor committed so he alone receives the family fortune. Eleanor is emotionally fragile and hears Tony calling from beyond the grave. Only weeks before Simon inherits, a man arrives looking like an adult Tony. He claims to be that brother and says he simply left years ago. Eleanor believes him, but Harriet insists he is not the real Tony.
