Plot summary
Colonel Flynn O'Flynn, a hard-drinking Irish-American, draws a young British aristocrat, Sebastian Oldsmith, into helping him poach ivory in Tanganyika, then part of German East Africa, in the years before the First World War. News reaches Oberst Herman Fleischer, the German commander of the southern provinces, that the American has gone back to poaching, and Fleischer hunts him with his Schutztruppe. Fleischer's warship rams and sinks the Arab dhow loaded with O'Flynn's poached ivory. O'Flynn and Sebastian recover at the older man's home, where Sebastian meets Rosa, O'Flynn's daughter, and falls for her. The two marry, and O'Flynn goes on stealing taxes from the German administration.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Shout at the Devil (1976)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The story is loosely based on the German light cruiser SMS Königsberg, which was sunk in 1915 after taking refuge in the Rufiji Delta; ivory hunter P J Pretorius had gone aboard her disguised as a native to pace out firing ranges for the Royal Navy's guns.
- Shooting on location in South Africa was controversial because of the country's then-apartheid regime; the South African portion of the film was based in the town of Port St. Johns, and Malta also served as a location.
- The film was cut during post-production, with around 50 minutes of footage excised from the war adventure before it was released.
SPOILER
The script kept the murder of the baby Maria Oldsmith from Wilbur Smith's novel, but the ending was changed: in the book all three main characters die.- Lee Marvin and Roger Moore got along well on set; director Peter Hunt said the pair were very funny together and would socialise and get drunk in the evenings, though they never had thick heads in the morning.
