Tony Britton

Tony Britton was an English actor whose career took in film, television and the stage. He was born in Birmingham and, after wartime service in the Army, got his start with an amateur drama group in Weston-super-Mare; he then turned professional and performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and at the Old Vic. The Rank Organisation had him under contract during the late 1950s, and he went on to make numerous British films, among them There's a Girl in My Soup (1970), Night Watch (1973) and The Day of the Jackal (1973). His television work included the sitcoms Father, Dear Father, ...And Mother Makes Five and Robin's Nest, and he starred in Don't Wait Up from 1983 to 1990. He won a Broadcasting Press Guild award and a British Academy Television Award nomination in 1975 for The Nearly Man, and in 1979 was nominated for an Olivier Award for My Fair Lady. He died in 2019.
