Liam Redmond

Biography

Liam Redmond was an Irish actor who worked in theater, film and television. Born in Limerick, he studied at University College, Dublin and moved from medicine into drama before William Butler Yeats invited him to the Abbey Theatre as a producer in 1935; Yeats wrote Death of Cuchullain for him, and that year he made his acting debut there in Sean O'Casey's The Silver Tassie. He became a regular on the London stage, played Flaherty in a 1975 Royal National Theatre staging of The Playboy of the Western World, and won the George Jean Nathan Award for his 1955 Broadway performance in The Wayward Saint. On screen he appeared in I See a Dark Stranger (1946), The Cruel Sea (1953), Night of the Demon (1957), Kid Galahad (1962), The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966) and Tobruk (1967), and his last film role was in Barry Lyndon (1975).

Big break
William Butler Yeats, the Irish poet, invited Redmond to the Abbey Theatre as a producer in 1935. Yeats wrote his play Death of Cuchullain so Redmond could star as Cúchullain, hero of an Irish myth.
