Plot summary
Michael Joyce is a brain surgeon in Harley Street, separated from his wife. He falls for Emma Wright after she brings her young daughter Ann to see him. Their affair ends quickly because neither can marry. Later Emma dies in a fall from an upper window of her country house. At the inquest, the death is ruled accidental, but Michael refuses to accept that verdict. He begins seeing Kate Howard, Emma's sister-in-law, without revealing that he and Emma were lovers, hoping she can lead him to the truth. As he gets closer to Kate, Michael becomes convinced that Emma was murdered and decides to seek his own form of justice rather than involve the police.

- James Mason and his then wife Pamela Kellino first planned a Brontë film called The Upturned Glass, written by Pamela, with Mason as Branwell Brontë. They dropped it on learning of the Hollywood production Devotion and made a psychological thriller under the same title instead, with both of them in leading roles.
- In the original script James Mason was to play a detective in a film centerd on a school mistress, but after he failed to secure the actors he wanted, Celia Johnson and Phyllis Calvert, the script was rewritten.
- The rewritten script had nothing to do with an upturned glass, but the filmmakers kept the title anyway because it had already received considerable publicity.
- For The Upturned Glass, James Mason, then at the height of his drawing power, was paid the equivalent of $240,000 in U.S. dollars plus a percentage of the profits.
