Plot summary
Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective, arrives in London to see his tailor and learns that a clown who performed a diving act in a circus has been killed by a poison dart. He takes on the case, and Captain Hastings of the British Secret Service is assigned to protect him, or at least to follow him, becoming his assistant of a sort. The clown was named Albert Aachen. A bowling instructor, Betty Barnard, is killed next, and both crime scenes carry the same calling card: a book entitled the ABC Guide to London. Poirot suspects the killer is working through the alphabet.
