Plot summary
Clem Morgan comes home from the Royal Air Force to a postwar England with no job, and he helps a gang move black market goods in coffins to a funeral parlor run by Narcy. The work seems harmless to him until a consignment turns out to hold drugs. He tells his girlfriend Ellie that he will finish with one last job, the looting of a warehouse. That night the alarm sounds, a policeman is knocked down and the car crashes. Clem is convicted of manslaughter, and Sally Connor, Narcy's girlfriend, visits him in Dartmoor to say she believes he was framed. He escapes, and the police begin a manhunt.
