Wilfrid Hyde-White
Biography
Wilfrid Hyde-White was an English actor whose stage and screen work spanned Britain and the United States. He often played droll, urbane upper-class characters. He made his stage debut in 1922 in the farce Tons of Money, first reached the West End three years later in Beggar on Horseback, and worked steadily in Aldwych Theatre comedies. After touring South Africa in 1932, he entered films with Josser on the Farm in 1934. A supporting role in The Third Man (1949) helped make him a familiar face in British cinema of the 1950s, including Carry On Nurse (1959) and Two-Way Stretch (1960). He acted with Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh in 1951, appeared alongside Marilyn Monroe in Let's Make Love (1960), and was best known on screen as Colonel Hugh Pickering in My Fair Lady (1964). He also starred in the BBC radio series The Men from the Ministry and earned two Tony Award nominations.
