Warren Mitchell
Biography
Warren Mitchell was an English actor best known as the bigoted cockney Alf Garnett, whom he played on television, film and stage from the 1960s onward. Born and raised in Stoke Newington, London, he trained at RADA and worked in radio, including Educating Archie and Hancock's Half Hour, before taking small film parts, often as sinister foreign agents. His work as Alf Garnett in Till Death Us Do Part brought him a BAFTA in 1967, and he revived the character for the film The Alf Garnett Saga (1972). His other films included The Curse of the Werewolf (1961), The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (1961), Help! (1965), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) and The Assassination Bureau (1969). He won two Laurence Olivier Awards, for Death of a Salesman and The Price, plus an Australian Film Institute Award for Norman Loves Rose, and he died in 2015.
