Plot summary
Okra hijacks three million dollars in gold bullion outside Cairo, and the thieves need a way to get two tons of gold into Europe. Aldo Vanucci is a master of disguise whom criminals call The Fox, one of the few men capable of the job, but he is in prison and does not want to shame his mother and his young sister Gina. His three sidekicks tell him that Gina is sometimes out late after school. Vanucci gets out by posing as the prison doctor and reaches Rome with his gang's help.

- Peter Sellers demanded that his wife Britt Ekland play Gina, the Fox's sister, in After the Fox. Her Nordic looks and accent were wrong for the part, but director Vittorio De Sica gave in to keep Sellers happy, according to screenwriter Neil Simon.
- After the Fox was the first film from Peter Sellers' new Brookfield production company, formed with former production designer John Bryan, and also its last, as the two fell out over Vittorio De Sica. Sellers said the director 'thinks in Italian; I think in English' and wanted him replaced, but Bryan refused.
- As a publicity stunt for After the Fox, United Artists announced it had signed Federico Fabrizi, the fictional director Peter Sellers played, to make three films. The story was planted in the trade press, but the editors of Daily Variety spotted the fake name and spoiled the gag.
- Vittorio De Sica insisted on using his own film editors, who did not speak English and did not understand the jokes, so After the Fox was later recut in Rome by Russell Lloyd. Neil Simon thought more funny material was left in a cutting room in Italy, possibly including a deleted scene of Vanucci impersonating one of the Beatles.
- Victor Mature had retired from films five years before After the Fox and was lured back by the prospect of parodying himself as the aging star Tony Powell, agreeing after a phone call from Peter Sellers. A clip from Mature's 1949 film Easy Living appears in the finished film.
- After the Fox was Neil Simon's first screenplay, written at a time when he had three hit shows running on Broadway: Little Me, Barefoot in the Park and The Odd Couple.
