Plot summary
At the end of the Second World War the Japanese occupiers of Malaya surrender, and three Resistance friends emerge from the jungle. One is Ferris, an American who served with the Malayans. Dhana, of French and Vietnamese parentage, is the woman he loves. Ng, whom Dhana's household raised, is a Communist. Ng goes to Moscow for training. By 1953, with independence being prepared, an insurgency has begun. Ferris owns a rubber plantation, Dhana runs a schoolteachers' union, and Ng commands partisans striking British economic targets. Officials ask Ferris to persuade Ng to halt the attacks.

- Producer Charles K. Feldman fired writer-producer Karl Tunberg, who thought Capucine was miscast, and had Ben Hecht rewrite the script to build up Capucine's part after William Holden, her co-star in The Lion in 1962, did not want to act with her again.
- Director Lewis Gilbert disliked the rewritten film and wanted to quit, but producer Charles K. Feldman began to cry and begged him to stay, and Gilbert then worked on the script with Ben Hecht.
- Susannah York did not want to do the nude scene the script called for, but the filmmakers insisted on location; she shot one take and her stand-in another, and photos of York filming it were later published in Playboy.
- Lewis Gilbert was approached by Mina Wallis to direct with William Holden and Audrey Hepburn attached; it turned out Hepburn was not interested but Holden was, and Gilbert liked the script and agreed to make the film.
