Richard Johnson
Biography
Richard Johnson was an English actor, writer and producer whose career spanned stage and screen. Born in Upminster, Essex, he trained at RADA and made his first professional stage appearance in a John Gielgud production of Hamlet in 1944. He performed at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in the 1950s and was among the first actors named an Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company, gaining praise as a romantic lead. MGM signed him in 1959, and he went on to play urbane, authoritative characters in films such as The Haunting (1963), Khartoum (1966), Deadlier Than the Male (1967), and Some Girls Do (1969), as well as Julius Caesar (1970). He helped found United British Artists in the 1980s and produced Castaway (1986). Johnson remained active in his later years, appearing in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008), and The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016), and leading the BBC radio comedy Bleak Expectations.

A role that slipped away
Terence Young, the director, wanted Johnson for the part of James Bond in the series' first film. MGM held his contract, so he could not accept the role.

Johnson trained at RADA. Wartime manpower shortages meant his first professional stage role came quickly, with John Gielgud's company in Manchester in a 1944 production of Hamlet.
