Michael Goodliffe
Biography
Michael Goodliffe was an English actor who started in repertory theater in Liverpool and later worked with the Stratford Memorial Theatre. Born in Bebington, Wirral, he attended St Edmund's School in Canterbury and Keble College, Oxford. He became known for suave roles, among them doctors, lawyers and army officers, though he also took working-class parts. In the Second World War he was captured and spent the rest of the conflict as a prisoner in Germany, where he staged and performed in plays and sketches for fellow captives, including two Hamlet productions in which he played the title role. After the war he acted in theater, film and television. His best-remembered film part was Thomas Andrews, designer of the Titanic, in A Night to Remember (1958). On television he played an unemployed Yorkshire miner in Sam (1973 to 1975) and Sir Thomas More in the 1972 BBC series The Six Wives of Henry VIII.
