Plot summary
In 1903, American seaman Henry Adams is stranded in Britain with no money. Two wealthy, eccentric brothers, Oliver and Roderick Montpelier, arrange for the Bank of England to issue a single banknote worth one million pounds and hand it to him in an envelope, saying only that it contains some money. Oliver believes the note alone will get its holder whatever he needs; Roderick insists it must be spent to be of use. Henry tries to return it, but the brothers have left for a month. A letter in the envelope explains the wager and promises him a job if he avoids spending the note for that month. Showing the note, he is taken for an eccentric millionaire and gains credit for meals, clothes and a hotel suite.

- Rank's John Davis wanted a star for the lead, so Ronald Neame and John Bryan approached Gregory Peck, who was then in France seeing the woman he would marry. Peck, who wanted to stay in Europe, liked the screenplay and agreed; United Artists put up finance that covered his £75,000 fee.
- Ronald Neame wanted Dinah Sheridan for the female lead but she had retired, leaving him, he said, in "desperate straights" because he could not find a girl. Jane Griffiths was cast instead.
