Biography

Walter Fitzgerald was an English character actor who worked in stage, film and television. Born in Stoke, Plymouth, he worked as a stockbroker before training at RADA. He made his professional stage debut in 1922 and first appeared in films in 1930. Early in his career, he went on tour with John Martin-Harvey and Seymour Hicks, and from 1928 to 1929 he served as understudy to Gerald du Maurier. On screen from the 1930s, he was often cast as officials such as police officers, doctors and lawyers. His best-known parts included Simon Fury in Blanche Fury (1948), Dr. Fenton in The Fallen Idol (1948) and Squire Trelawney in Treasure Island (1950). In H.M.S. Defiant (1962), his admiral hears Captain Crawford's complaints about cruelty at sea and then ignores them. During the 1950s and 1960s he also worked in British television, and he died in 1976.
