Plot summary

In the kingdom of Russia, Tsar Nicolai's daughter, Princess Alexeya, refuses every suitor brought before her. She declares that she will marry only the man who brings her father a ship that can fly, and the Tsar spreads word of the offer. Two brothers, Sergei and Boris, talk their poor woodcutter parents into paying for the journey and spend the money on themselves. Their younger brother Pieter follows with what little his parents can spare, and in the forest he shares his food with an old man, who rewards him with a ship built from snow, ice and the feathers of a snowbird. The old man tells Pieter never to refuse a passenger, so he collects companions on the way: an archer with keen eyesight, a fast runner, a listener, and a woodsman and his wife.
