Victor Maddern
Biography
Victor Maddern was an English actor who joined the Merchant Navy as a teenager during the Second World War and later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His first screen part came in 1950 in Seven Days to Noon, playing a soldier who hesitates to shoot a deranged scientist. From then until the early 1990s he worked steadily in film and television, usually as servicemen, whether non-commissioned ranks such as sergeants and corporals or ordinary privates, sailors and airmen, and often for laughs. He took minor parts in five Carry On films, and among his departures from type were the hunchback Carl in Blood of the Vampire (1958) and the main role in Street of Shadows (1953) as a disabled barman who turns to murder. Stage work included a praised turn as Helicon in Caligula and two spells in The Mousetrap, and on American television he was Tommy Finch in the sitcom Fair Exchange.
