John Stuart

Biography

John Stuart was a Scottish actor who became a leading man in British silent films during the 1920s and later made the change to sound pictures, his screen career lasting almost six decades. Born in Edinburgh, he moved to London as a child. He had no acting training when he began on stage at the Old Vic in 1919 in The Trojan Women. Walter West then gave him a small part in the silent film Her Son in 1920. He went on to star in many silent features, including Alfred Hitchcock's first film as director, The Pleasure Garden (1925). He continued with Hitchcock on the thriller Number Seventeen (1932), playing a detective. In his later years he often played middle-class professionals, and he appeared in the Hammer films The Mummy (1959), The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) and Blood of the Vampire (1958), as well as Sink the Bismarck! (1960). He died in 1979.
