Marianne Stone

Biography

Marianne Stone was an English character actress whose career ran from the early 1940s into the late 1980s. Born in London in 1922, she often played working class figures like landladies, secretaries, and barmaids. Her early credits used the names Mary Stone and Marion Stone. She became a regular in British comedy through nine Carry On films, among them Carry On Nurse (1959), Carry On Constable (1960), Carry On Jack (1963), Carry On Screaming (1966), Carry On at Your Convenience (1971), Carry On Dick (1974), and Carry On Behind (1975). She also appeared in the Carry On Laughing episode The Case of the Screaming Winkles. Other films included Brighton Rock (1948) and Lolita (1962), plus Oh! What a Lovely War (1969). She worked on the first two Quatermass movies, had supporting roles with Norman Wisdom, and tackled a serious part as Lena van Broecken in three BBC Secret Army episodes between 1977 and 1978. She appeared in 201 films.
