Walter Hudd
Biography
Walter Hudd was a British actor and director. Born in London, he first took to the stage in 1919 with a role in The Manxman, then toured with the Fred Terry Company. His performance as Guildenstern in a modern dress Hamlet in 1925 brought him serious notice. In 1947 he directed three plays at Stratford-on-Avon: Richard II, Doctor Faustus, and Twelfth Night, in which he also acted as Malvolio. He appeared on Broadway once, in a Theatre Guild revival of You Never Can Tell in 1948, and worked with the Malvern Festival, Stratford Memorial, and Old Vic companies. Later he served as Head of Drama at the Central School of Speech and Drama. His screen career started in 1935 with Anthony Asquith's Moscow Nights. He was cast as T. E. Lawrence in an Alexander Korda biopic that was never made, and he had earlier played a Lawrence-inspired character in Bernard Shaw's Too True to be Good. He died in 1963.
