Plot summary
Winston Churchill is a boy at a preparatory boarding school, and he is unhappy enough there that his parents bring him home after a caning. He submits a blank paper in the entrance examination for Harrow School, and the headmaster, James Welldon, takes him in all the same. At a school presentation he recites a poem of a thousand lines; his nanny comes to hear him, his parents do not. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, resigns as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and doctors tell Lady Randolph that her husband's illness cannot be cured. Watching his son play with tin soldiers, Lord Randolph proposes the army. Winston is accepted by Sandhurst on his third attempt, and his father, unhappy at a placing near the bottom of the class, warns him to make something of himself.
