Nigel Davenport
Biography
Nigel Davenport was an English actor who built a career across theater, television and film. Born in 1928, he began on stage at the Savoy Theatre and with the Shakespeare Memorial Company before joining the English Stage Company at the Royal Court in 1956. He moved into British film and television in supporting parts, among them a walk-on in Look Back in Anger (1959), and later took a small role in Peeping Tom. His work as the Duke of Norfolk in the film A Man for All Seasons (1966) brought him notice, and he went on to play Lord Birkenhead in Chariots of Fire (1981). He shared the screen with Michael Caine in the war film Play Dirty and took the part of Lord Bothwell in Mary, Queen of Scots. On television he appeared in The Saint and portrayed King George III in Prince Regent. He served as president of Equity from 1986 to 1992 and died in 2013.

First role
Davenport was one of the earliest members of the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre, joining in 1956 after appearing at the Savoy Theatre and with the Shakespeare Memorial Company.
A role that slipped away
While Stanley Kubrick was making his 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, Davenport spoke HAL 9000's lines off-camera opposite Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. Kubrick dismissed him after a few weeks, since the English accent struck him as too distracting.
A change of course
Davenport did National Service in the 1950s with the Royal Army Service Corps. He worked as a disc jockey for the British Forces Broadcasting Service in Hamburg.
