Plot summary
The liner SS Britannic is on a North Atlantic crossing with 1200 passengers when Nicholas Porter, who owns the shipping line, takes a call in London. The caller, an Irish-accented man calling himself Juggernaut, says he has placed high explosives aboard, timed to sink the ship at dawn. The drums are booby-trapped, and moving any of them will set them off. He offers instructions for rendering the bombs safe in exchange for £500,000, and sets off small bombs behind the funnel that injure one crewman. Rough seas rule out an evacuation by lifeboat, and officials warn that paying would cost the line its subsidy. Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Fallon heads a bomb-disposal unit and parachutes aboard, while Supt. John McLeod of Scotland Yard, whose wife and children are holidaying on the ship, leads the hunt for the caller.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Juggernaut (1974)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Advertisements in British papers sought extras for a free North Sea cruise, warning the ship would deliberately sail into the worst weather so the seas were too rough to lower lifeboats. 2,500 people applied and 250 were picked.
- Writer-producer Richard Alan Simmons was so unhappy with the reworked script that he took his own name off the finished film, credited as Richard DeKoker.
- Two directors came and went before Richard Lester took over: Bryan Forbes left over "minor disagreements" and Don Medford was fired by producer David V. Picker, reportedly over the script and casting.
- The script was inspired by a real 1972 bomb threat against the Queen Elizabeth 2, which sent an SAS man, two Special Boat Squadron men and a Welsh bomb disposal expert parachuting into the Atlantic to board and search the liner.
- The production chartered its ship at a fixed rate in February 1974 just as oil prices soared in the 1973 oil crisis; the Soviets, who paid the vessel's operating costs during filming, ended up losing money on the deal.
- A room at St Thomas' Hospital in Lambeth, overlooking the River Thames, doubled as the office of the shipping line's managing director.
