Plot summary
Just before Christmas, a homeless, heroin-addicted woman named Jenna O'Connor leaves her newborn daughter at the home of her sister Maggie, a psychiatric nurse in New York City. Maggie adopts the baby, Cody, and raises her. Cody shows signs of autism, though Maggie questions the diagnosis, and the nuns at her special-needs Catholic school in Brooklyn notice strange things around the girl. Elsewhere in the city, children have been kidnapped and murdered, and FBI agent John Travis finds that each victim shares Cody's birthdate and age. Then Jenna reappears, clean and married to Eric Stark, a self-help guru, and the couple takes Cody. With no legal claim to the girl, Maggie turns to Travis for help.
