Plot summary
In 1916, Kitty Baldry and her husband's cousin Jenny share a house in England, and no word has come from Chris's regiment. Kitty's worries center on food rationing and rising prices. A stranger, Margaret Grey, arrives saying that Chris is ill and has come back to England. Kitty will not credit it and turns her away. Only then does she read the telegram properly and learn that Chris is in a London hospital. Visiting him, Kitty and Jenny find he is under treatment for shell-shock, and he does not know his wife; he asks for Margaret. Humiliated, Kitty leaves. Chris comes home to a place that seems alien, failing to recognize old friends, uninterested in Kitty, and amused by simple pleasures, walking and gazing at the river.

- Halfway through the making of The Return of the Soldier the money ran out, and the cast and crew kept working without being paid until another British production company came through with more money, Ann-Margret recalled.
- Half the budget of The Return of the Soldier came from Barry Cooper, an American orthodontist; when the money ran out midway, the filmmakers raised more from George Walker, who had made The Bitch and The Stud and wanted a "legitimate" film that could be shown at Cannes.
