Plot summary
The Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 is the largest military operation of its kind, striking the German forces that hold the Western Front. It is drawn from the experiences of soldiers who took part. Preparation takes two years and costs thousands of lives, and the operation depends on a deception and on the discretion of many people and the nerve of a few. Both sides are shown, through the accounts of those who were present: the planners and the troops who go ashore, the German defenders, and the people of France and mainland Europe who fight a complex and deadly secret war of their own.
