Plot summary
Out of prison at forty-six, Jerri Blank heads back to Flatpoint, the town she walked away from thirty-two years earlier. Her mother is gone, her father, Guy, has a new wife, Sara Blank, and he is unconscious, a coma caused by stress. A half-brother, Derrick, is arrogant. The family doctor tells her that Guy might wake if things went back to how they were before she left, only better. Jerri starts over at Flatpoint High as a freshman and takes a place on the Fig Neutrons, the science fair team of Chuck Noblet, with Megawatti Sucarnaputri and Tammi Littlenut as teammates. Principal Onyx Blackman brings in Roger Beekman, the teacher behind nine straight state science fair wins, to secure a victory.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Strangers with Candy (2005)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Larc Spies did not return for the role of Derrick because, according to Sedaris, "he looks like a longshoreman now"; several other characters were recast because the original actors looked too old to believably play high schoolers.
- Warner shelved the film a week before its planned 21 October 2005 release, citing the producers' failure to file copyright paperwork on time; another source thought the real reason was that the heads of Warner Bros. disliked the film's crass humor.
