Robert Flemyng
Biography
Robert Flemyng was a British actor who gave up medical studies for the theater and learned the trade in provincial repertory. Born in Liverpool, he made his stage debut in 1931 in Patrick Hamilton's thriller Rope and joined the Liverpool Repertory Company the following year. A leading West End role in 1935 led to his first big success, Terence Rattigan's comedy French Without Tears, which ran for 1,025 performances, and he appeared in comedies in London and New York until the Second World War, in which he served in the Royal Army Service Corps and won the Military Cross. Afterward he mixed light comedy with serious plays by T. S. Eliot and Graham Greene. His television work included more than 100 episodes of the BBC serial Compact, and he took roles in more than 30 films, among them The Blue Lamp (1950), The Man Who Never Was (1956) and his first Hollywood film, Funny Face (1957). He died in 1995.
