Plot summary
Ruth Ellis manages a London club whose main customers are racing drivers, and she lives with her son Andy in the flat above it. Another child stays with the family of her estranged husband. At the club she meets David, who comes from a wealthy family and hopes to make a career in motor racing, though he has little money and drinks a great deal. His looks and charm draw her in. He has no regular work, so marriage is out of reach, and his relatives would not have her. When David causes a drunken scene at the club, Ruth is dismissed and left without a place to live. A wealthy admirer, Desmond, finds her a flat for herself and Andy, but she keeps seeing David.
