Plot summary
At the end of the 19th century, Esther Kahn lives in London's East End and sews for a living alongside her Jewish family, a trade that gives her no satisfaction. She keeps to herself, her siblings mock her, and she has no clear idea what her future holds. One evening she attends a play, and afterward she decides she wants to act. She takes small roles and understudy work, and in time she supports herself. The actor Nathan Quellen becomes her friend and teacher, and under his guidance she sharpens her skills. What she still lacks is experience of real life.
