Plot summary
Major William Foster is an American officer in the French Foreign Legion, troubled by memories of the war that has just ended. He takes charge of a unit and heads for the Rif in Morocco, where Bedouin and Berber tribes led by El Krim have risen against French rule. His orders also include escorting archaeologists sent from the Louvre, who are digging at an ancient city near Erfoud. Foster had dealt with El Krim before the war; a condition of their peace was that the French stop digging without tribal approval.
