Plot summary
Napoleon Bonaparte has spent six years on Saint Helena when he puts a plan in motion: trade identities with Eugene Lenormand, a French deckhand, and let Eugene announce the switch once he is back in France. The ship changes course and docks in Belgium, so Napoleon crosses into France overland. A former guardsman, Sergeant Bommel, meets him at the border and names a trusted contact in Paris, Lieutenant Truchaut. Napoleon arrives to learn Truchaut has died, and Truchaut's widow, Nicole, known as Pumpkin, takes him in as an old comrade of her husband. Her lodger, Dr. Lambert, and her adopted son, Gerard, share the house, and on Saint Helena, Eugene settles into the comforts of the imperial role.
