Plot summary
Reading Through the Looking Glass to her daughter at bedtime, a mother dozes off and passes through the bedroom mirror, arriving in Looking-Glass Land as Alice, grown up rather than a child. Chess pieces stir to life, and a volume of verse in mirror writing contains "Jabberwocky". In a garden of talking flowers the Red Queen tells her the countryside is one giant chessboard and promises a crown if Alice advances to the eighth row. Alice becomes a white pawn and rides a train as far as the fourth row. The Gnat then explains the looking-glass insects, and in a wood where nothing has a name she forgets hers. Tweedledum and Tweedledee recite a poem about a walrus and a carpenter while the Red King sleeps nearby.
