Plot summary

Philippe, born first of the royal twins, was spirited from the court as a baby and grew up unaware of who he was, while his brother Louis took the crown of France. Louis gives himself to dancing and pleasure rather than to the welfare of France. Colbert and D'Artagnan plan to free Philippe, seize the king and set Philippe on the throne, and to bring down Nicolas Fouquet, the finance minister, who has taken money from the national treasury. D'Artagnan's old comrades Aramis, Athos and Porthos join him for the task. Louis has no desire for his wife, Queen Marie-Therese, and presses himself on Louise de La Vallière, who turns from him toward Philippe.
