Plot summary
Past fifty and on sabbatical from her college, Marion Post sublets a furnished apartment downtown to finish a new book, since construction in her own building has made quiet hard to find. The office next door belongs to a therapist, and the acoustics carry his sessions into her room, where she hears a young woman named Hope describe a growing sense that her life is false and empty. Marion's own life includes Ken, her second husband, her stepdaughter Laura, her brother Paul, and Claire, a childhood friend she lost touch with. Hope's words set Marion to weighing the choices she has made and the distance she keeps from the people around her.
