Plot summary
Primo and Secondo, brothers from Calabria, run Paradise, an Italian restaurant on the Jersey Shore in the 1950s. Primo cooks with a perfectionist's rigor and resents customers who expect Americanized versions of his dishes, while their uncle's invitation to help run a popular restaurant in Rome appeals to him. Secondo, the manager, wants a life in America and keeps the place going on the few patrons it draws, among them an artist who pays with paintings. Short of money, Secondo asks Pascal, the owner of a successful restaurant nearby, for a loan. Pascal offers the brothers jobs instead, which Secondo refuses, then promises to bring the singer Louis Prima to dine at Paradise. The brothers spend their savings on food, drink and decorations, and invite guests for a dinner built around a timpano, a complex baked pasta dish.
