Plot summary
Robin Hood has spent twenty years as a captain in King Richard's crusade, and the fighting in France has left him weary. When he and Little John refuse the king's order to storm a castle defended by one old man sheltering women and children, the pair fall out of favor and return to England. In Sherwood Forest they find their old comrades Will Scarlet and Friar Tuck, and Robin learns that his deeds have become legend. He asks after Maid Marian and goes to the priory where she lives, discovering she has become an abbess. The Sheriff of Nottingham, acting on King John's order to expel church leaders, has ordered Marian's arrest.

- Audrey Hepburn had not stood on a film set for eight years, since Wait Until Dark in 1967, and at 46 was reportedly anxious about how her older face would read on camera. It was the first film in which she played a character her own age, Marian being a few years older than Hepburn was.
