Biography

Halle Berry is an American actress who first came to attention through modeling and beauty pageants before turning to acting. Born in Cleveland, she made her film debut in Spike Lee's Jungle Fever (1991) and soon appeared in Boomerang (1992), The Flintstones (1994) and Bulworth (1998). For the television film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999), she was both producer and star, and won an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Her performance as a struggling widow in Monster's Ball (2001) won the Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the first African American woman to win that honor. She went on to play Storm in the X-Men series and appeared in Swordfish (2001), Die Another Day (2002), Gothika (2003) and Catwoman (2004). Later credits include Perfect Stranger (2007), Cloud Atlas (2012), The Call (2013), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) and Bruised (2020), her directorial debut.

    Berry starred in Catwoman and won the Worst Actress Razzie for it. She went to the ceremony to accept the award herself, carrying her Oscar from Monster's Ball, and treated it as a rock bottom moment on the way to the top.
