Plot summary
Mike McKenna spends his days on construction sites in Paterson, New Jersey, until Roxanne Hall, his high school sweetheart from 25 years earlier, turns up with an offer. She works for a covert organization called The Union, which needs a fresh face after a botched operation in Trieste killed several of its agents. Roxanne and her boss Tom Brennan want Mike because nobody would suspect him. Training that normally takes six months is compressed into under two weeks: a new identity, psychological tests, hand-to-hand combat and shooting. A briefcase of government intelligence about agents who have served allied Western nations is headed for auction, and the mission spans Europe with threats that include Iranian intelligence, North Korean agents and Russian spies.
