Plot summary
Sandra Beecher comes to Kona Pali High School in Hawaii to teach English in place of a science teacher who quit. Frank Machi, who runs the shop class, shows her around. In her first class she meets six students who call themselves lolos, and she promises to push them through. No Kona Pali students have entered the district science fair, so she takes the six to it. There they see a solar car model that Sutcliffe Academy has entered in the Hawaiian inter-island race, and Jack Fryman of Celtech announces that the winner will go on to the World Solar Challenge in Australia. Daniel Webster has a design of his own, and the six ask Sandra to let them build it.
