Plot summary
Fifteen years after the DEA closed a dummy corporation operation whose code name was SWORDFISH, the $400 million it generated has grown to $9.5 billion, held in a government account. Gabriel Shear leads a counter-terrorist group known as Black Cell, which wants that money to fund its campaign against international terrorism, but the funds sit behind super-encryption. Stanley Jobson, a hacker notorious for planting a virus in the FBI's Carnivore program, is on parole, barred from computers and the internet, and his ex-wife Melissa holds a restraining order that keeps him from their daughter Holly. Ginger Knowles brings him to Shear, who forces him to crack a secure Defense Department server. Shear then offers Stanley $10 million to build a hydra, a multi-headed worm, to move the $9.5 billion out of the government slush funds.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Swordfish (2001)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Swordfish presents the story of Rodney Cox, whom an urban legend claims President Thomas Jefferson personally executed for treason; the rumor, which has persisted despite no evidence Cox existed, seems to originate from the film.
- The opening explosion was shot by Frantic Films using "Matrix-like effects" and 135 synchronized still cameras; it contained so many composites that the producers and director Dominic Sena could not tell what was real and what was computer-generated.
