Plot summary
Dorothy Dandridge performs on the club circuit with her sister Vivian, and Earl Mills becomes the manager who stays with her as her career moves into movies. She has an affair with Otto Preminger, and her marriages and her affairs bring her heartbreak. The racism of the time follows her: she is not allowed to use the white bathrooms and is handed a cup instead, and a Las Vegas hotel drains and scrubs its pool after she puts a foot in the water. She wins the part of Carmen Jones against rivals who were far better known, and the role makes her the first black woman to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
