Plot summary
Fred Flintstone works a bronto-crane at Slate & Co. in the Stone Age town of Bedrock, where he lives with his wife Wilma and their daughter Pebbles. His best friend and neighbor Barney Rubble and Barney's wife Betty want to adopt, and Fred lends them the money they need. The boy they bring home, Bamm-Bamm, has super strength and can only pronounce his own name. At the quarry, Cliff Vandercave, a vice-president, and Sharon Stone, his secretary, pursue a scheme of their own, and Cliff announces an aptitude test to choose a new executive. Barney sees Fred struggling with the questions and switches their answer sheets, so Fred is given the post. Cliff's first instruction is to fire Barney, the lowest scorer, and he warns Fred what refusal will cost.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- John Goodman said on WTF with Marc Maron that he felt "sandbagged" into playing Fred Flintstone when Spielberg announced his casting, and that he got drunk about six months before filming and called Spielberg to say he did not think he could do it.
- Danny DeVito was the studio's first choice to play Barney Rubble, but he turned it down, feeling he was too gruff for the character, and reportedly suggested Rick Moranis for the role instead.
- Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel worked on the script with Levant and took home a reported $100,000 for just two days' work; Rick Moranis, who sat in on Levant's roundtables, later called it "one of those scripts that had about 18 writers."
- Sharon Stone was lined up to play the character Miss Stone, but she turned the part down because of scheduling conflicts; the role was then offered to Nicole Kidman.
- The Flintstones grossed $130.5 million in the United States and Canada, including the $37.2 million it took over its four-day Memorial Day opening weekend in 1994, a then-record for the holiday that beat Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
