Plot summary

Rodney Copperbottom is an aspiring inventor in Rivet Town, a city of robots. He builds a small robot called Wonderbot to help his father Herb, a dishwasher at a restaurant, and the machine wrecks the kitchen, leaving Herb facing the cost of the damage. Rodney travels to Robot City to show Wonderbot to Bigweld, the philanthropist inventor he has idolized since childhood. At Bigweld Industries, the new head, Phineas T. Ratchet, has stopped making spare parts and inventions for outmoded robots, pushing expensive upgrades instead, and Rodney is thrown out. He befriends Fender Pinwheeler, who introduces him to the Rusties, a band of outmoded robots. Cappy, an executive at the company, opposes Ratchet.

Initially Chris Wedge and William Joyce wanted to make a film adaptation of Joyce's 1993 book Santa Calls, but after a failed animation test in 2000, which resulted in 20th Century Fox Animation declining to make the film, the pair decided to develop an original story about a world of robots instead.
Robots was the first film to feature the new trailer for Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, and it was reported that Star Wars fans went to see the movie just to see the trailer and hear the voice of Ewan McGregor, who played Rodney Copperbottom.
In light of the Release the Snyder Cut movement and the closure of Blue Sky Studios, a movement to release a director's cut of Robots gained traction in 2022; Wedge had raised the idea on the original DVD commentary, saying there would be alternate takes and that Cappy would have been more fleshed out.
It was the first 20th Century Fox film released on the same day on IMAX and conventional 35mm screens, the first IMAX DMR film released in the spring season, and the second IMAX DMR film distributed by Fox.
The silent robot Diesel tries a Darth Vader voice box voiced by James Earl Jones, while Diesel's singing voice is an archival recording of James Brown.
