Plot summary
Eastern State University's football team is under pressure to reach a bowl game, and head coach Sam Winters has been told that a losing season will end his job. He brings in Darnell Jefferson, a gifted running back whose life so far has been football. Autumn, a student, shows him around campus and tutors him when his classwork suffers, though she is already dating Ray Griffen, the starting tailback. Joe Kane, the quarterback, is a Heisman Trophy candidate who drinks as the pressure builds and whose father keeps his distance. Junior Alvin Mack, barely literate, reads a defense well in film study and counts on a professional career.
