Plot summary
Khaila Richards, addicted to crack cocaine, leaves her infant son Isaiah in an alley near a crack house and promises to come back for him. She passes out, and the next day the baby is found and taken to a hospital, where doctors find he is addicted to the drug too. Khaila wakes and returns to the alley to find him gone. Margaret Lewin, a white social worker who cares for Isaiah, adopts him and brings him home to her husband Charles and daughter Hannah. Khaila, caught shoplifting, is sent to rehab, unaware her son is alive. Years later, after treatment, she tells her case worker what she did, and a lawyer is hired to contest the adoption and seek custody of Isaiah.
