Plot summary
Karla Dyson earns her living as a diner waitress and is raising Frankie, her six-year-old, on her own while a custody fight with her estranged husband goes on. She takes the boy to a carnival one afternoon, and a call from her divorce lawyer pulls her attention away. When she looks for Frankie again he is gone, and the only thing left where he had been is his toy voice recorder. Out in the parking lot she watches a woman haul the boy into a green Ford Mustang, a man already at the wheel. Karla runs after the car, then climbs into her own and follows the Mustang down the road, her phone left on the ground behind her.
