Plot summary
Jordan Turner works as a 911 operator. When fifteen-year-old Leah Templeton phones to say a man is breaking into her house, Jordan tells her to hide. The line drops, and the callback gives the girl's location away to the intruder. Months later Jordan trains operators instead of taking field calls, still affected by that earlier call. Then teenager Casey Welson, heading home from the mall, is assaulted in a parking garage and thrown into the trunk of a car. She calls 911 from a disposable phone, so her whereabouts cannot be fixed by GPS. The rookie who answers cannot handle the call, and Jordan takes over, keeping the girl talking and gathering what she can about the man driving and the car itself.

- Halle Berry was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after falling headfirst on concrete while shooting a fight sequence for The Call; a spokesperson said she suffered a minor head injury and was released after a precautionary check.
- Producers planned to shoot The Call in Canada in June 2011 after failing to make the cut for a California tax credit and settled on Ottawa, but nine months later the California Film Commission called back with a $1.9 million tax deduction; producer Michael Helfant said they were "literally days from starting to put down a deposit."
- Richard D'Ovidio's story was first conceived as a television series called The Hive, named for the buzz of constant calls sounding like bees, but he rewrote it as a film after deciding operators "couldn't be the ones kicking in doors and going out into the field," expanding the planned pilot into a movie.
- With takings of over $68 million, The Call became WWE Studios' most commercially successful film to date, ahead of See No Evil starring wrestler Kane ($19 million) and 12 Rounds starring wrestler John Cena ($17 million).
- Halle Berry spent a full day reading 21 pages of 9-1-1 operator jargon that was cut and edited into the film, which amounted to 21 minutes of performance with no breaks.
